One of the must do activities here in Cameron Highlands is to go hiking. The mountains of Cameron Highlands are crisscrossed with dozens of trails each with varying levels of difficulty. I was travelling alone and I thought that it would be best if I travelled on the safer and more popular trails. The trail I chose was 9A as labeled by Lonely Planet. It is actually Trail 9 but it was modified by Lonely Planet for safety. Hikers need to start at near the bus terminal in Tanah Rata and start walking past a small playground.
From the playground the number of buildings start to drop and number of cars drops to zero. This part is still paved road, since there is a big research facility here named MARDI for the Malaysian Research and Development Institute which basically researches improvements to agriculture. There is a small stream which follows the road, I suspect I also need to follow this river.
A sign prompted me to veer away from the main road and continue on to a smaller road which also leads to an apartment block up a hill. From here I can see where I need to go. There was a small bridge which crosses the creek past a small plantation and into the jungle and the big unknown. I haven’t done this in a long while so I was really looking forward to it.
