With a full stomach from eating at Eleven Bistro and Restaurant, I am now ready to plunge into the very lively Jonkey Street Night Market. Jonker Street or Jalan Hang Jebat as it is now known is probably the most famous street in all of Melaka. Every weekend this street is closed off to traffic as the street turns into a night market. I distinctly remember this night market the last time I went there. It was probably the presence of the night market that we missed having taste of Melaka’s famous chicken rice balls. How that turned out is another story.
As with any respectable night market, the Jonker Street Night Market is packed with people, mostly tourists wanting to see what it available at the night market. So what is available? There isn’t really a theme to the night market, as the tables are laid out in an orderly fashion on both sides of the street. The center of the Jonker Street is filled with people, jostling with each other, slowly inching their way through the crowd. A lot of food is sold here, but there are other stuff too like household wares like lamps and bathroom accessories. Tourist stuff like chopsticks and souvenir items are also sold here.
The Night Market is one of the highlights of a trip to Melaka, I think I made the right decision to spend a night here at Melaka instead of heading back to Singapore. The night market is open up until 12 midnight, but you’d probably be too tired by then to even care.
