Trees Overhang the Sungei Melaka

The first time I visited Melaka wasn’t really that interesting. After all, it was a company outing and I needed to follow their schedule, as a result, I didn’t really see or notice much of Melaka’s rich cultural heritage. On this visit, I had much more time and I was able take me time to see the sights of Melaka. One of the more significant places, I managed to overlook is apparently, the presence of a river in Melaka. I was only aware that it was beside the see and I didn’t like it as it didn’t seem to be inviting.

In this trip, one of the surprises is Sungei Melaka or Melaka River. The river runs behind the little windmill at the Melaka Town Square. Actually, there is no need for directions on this one as it is much more prominent now. How prominent? Well, it is actually more touristy now. It comes with river tours now. The Sungei Melaka is actually quite narrow in some parts which makes travelling on big ships a problem. So right now, only small tourist boats ply the river.

The river apparently has gone through a major rehabilitation, and it does look much more pleasant and clean. The riverside has been cleaned up with some restaurants and pubs set up along the river. There is a promenade along the river which is actually quite pleasant. In some parts, trees have been plants further enhancing the image of the river.
