First there was a flower market, then a bird garden, now I find out Hong Kong has a place called the Goldfish Market. Also in the Mongkok area, the Goldfish market is, as expected, the place to be for buying goldfish, and how many kinds are there?! The street was lined with shops selling goldfish of all shapes and sizes. The goldfish with either all jammed into a small aquarium, or individually packaged in transparent plastic bags. The goldfish were all hung on a rack for customers to see.
This seemed like a rather bizzarre market since it was all about goldfish. Shop after shop were selling fish, but most of them had goldfish. It was rather shocking to see them cram so much fish into one bowl and I wonder if there is enough air for the fish to breathe in. The fish are all very energetic it would not be hard to imagine that they use up a lot of oxygen. Even the small plastic bags although convenient for the buyer seem unlikely that they would have enough oxygen for the fish to survive a day. I found it rather interesting to just stare at the fish and there are so many of them it is not hard to just get mesmerized by it all.
