As if this place was planned from the start, right next to the Flower Market is a rather interesting little park. This is the Yuen Po Bird Garden. As you might expect, this place sells all sorts of birds to keep as pets naturally. On weekends bird lovers, come here to show off their pets, mostly songbirds. Probably one of my favorites were parrots since they seem to be very intelligent. In fact, I saw a bird which was eating off its foot, much like a human hand.
There were also mimic birds which can say a few words I tried “Hello” on it but it didn’t seem to get it. I tried “Wei” which is Mandarin for “Hello” and close enough to the Cantonese equivalent and it responded! Apparently I needed to pronounce it correctly if not it will not respond. Just like the Flower Market, the yuen Po Bird Garden is lines with numerous shops selling all sorts of birds.
They also have stuff for keeping birds such as intricate bird cages and of course food. I was surprised to see them having what appears to be live grasshoppers in a bag, presumably for the bird to eat. It was a bit unnerving to see the grasshoppers crawling all over the bags and there are a lot of these bags. So be careful what you touch here. I remember a friend of mine bought a pet bird and now I know where she got it from. If you would ask me, the Yuen Po Bird Garden is much more interesting that the flower market. After all, flowers can’t say “Wei”, right?
