I decided that I would be visiting places I have never been to in Hong Kong. Looking through the tourist guides, I found a place which I have never been to and will still provide a little interest for me. Not only that, it is right next to several interesting places I have never been to. I took a bus from the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry terminal past Mong Kong and intending to get off a Prince Edward station but I missed my stop and ended up in Lai Chi Kok, which was rather uninteresting. It walked my way back to Prince Edward MRT station and started to look for the Flower Market.
It was a fair bit of walking from the Prince Edward MRT station not to mention from Lai Chi Kok. The flower market just covers one apartment block. I never had high hopes for this place. A flower market is a flower market after all. Anyway, as with the tradition where Hong Kong shops tend to bunch together, the Flower Market is another example of this. Door after door of shops selling flowers and potted plants will greet you. The flowers are naturally beautiful, they even have flowers imported from Europe. I wonder though who buys flowers on a regular basis. I understand that they have special occasions like Chinese New Year and maybe Ching Ming but other than that I don’t really see a huge demand for this place, most especially with such intense competition. It is really a wonder these shops survive.
If you love flowers and plants I think this place would be good for you. However, to me, they are just a bunch of neighborhood flower shops all “bunched” together if may just that word. The place is nice to walk through as it really smells nice. The flowers are definitely fresh and will not disappoint the afficionado. To get here, get off at the Mongkok KCR station, the flower market is just outside the building, beside the overhead tracks.
