The town center of Pulau Ubin gives us a glimpse of the life of the residents. Most of Pulau Ubin has remain untouched since it was declared to be a park. Although some part of Pulau Ubin have been converted into resorts and meeting centers, the town center remains as it was thirty years ago. The town center features a small square which is now criss-crossed by numerous bicycles driven by visitors to the island who now provide the bulk of the residents income.
There is a large stage where performances are held. There was no perforamance at the time of my visit but I can see how these performances can really liven up the place here in Pulau Ubin. Just across the stage is a small but active Buddhist temple. There is a large cylindrical chamber to burn incense and paper money as offerings to the dead. The temple itself is a very simple shelter painted red with the place of worship in the middle. I guess it shows how the people of Pulau Ubin value religion even in the age of the internet.
