If you want to get a taste of the wild outdoors in Singapore, Pulau Ubin is the place to be. The island has lots of trails for hiking and paved and unpaved roads for biking. At the center of Pulau Ubin where the jetty is, there are numerous stalls which rent out bicycles for the adventurous. Their bikes range from $2 for a basic bicycle for the whole day to $10 for a decent one. The quality of the bicycles vary a lot so it would be advisable to try out everything in the bike just to make sure. I’ve had a friend where the chain broke and had to drag the bike back to town from very far away. I myself had my brakes fail on me to crash into one my friends.
Years before the establishment of Pulau Ubin as a protected area, it served as nothing more than a place for quarrying. This went on for several years and the entire island is riddled with these abandoned quarries, which now make for nice little lakes. In fact in one of the quarries were visited along the way there were a lot of birds nesting in the far side of the quarry. It seems that nature has already taken over what man as abandoned. I think it is for the best.
