One of the more imposing buildings in the Intramuros complex is the Palacio del Gobernador. As the name implied, this used to be the site where the governor general of the Philippines held office. Before that, it was the residence of the secretary to the governor general at the time until he was imprisoned and the property confiscated. Numerous branches of the Spanish government also held office here. The structure you see now is not the original structure, as original structure was damaged by an earthquake, while another earthquake effectively stopped all restoration activities. Since then, the governor general decided to move his office to Malacanang Palace, where the seat of government is today.
The ruins of the former palace werre rebuilt into the imposing edifice you see today. This is one of the tallest buildings here in Intramuros and it now houses several government functions such as the Bureau of Treasury and also the Intramuros Administration. Since it is a private establishment, there was no way I would be able to go in and explore this building anymore. It would be interesting to note that the Palacio del Gobernador was built right next to the Cathedral, emphasizing the clout of the church over the Spanish government.
