Intramuros has been one of those significant but often neglected part of the country’s treasures. The walls of the city have been built to keep out invaders, much like how the Great Wall of China was built. The walls of Intramuros are much higher though and double as lookout posts. Much of the walls have been preserved and restored. The surrounding area has been converted into a golf course, at least it is a good patch of green.
It is amazing how the walls managed to survive the bombing of Manila during the second world war where the entire city was laid to ruin. These days, it is a place for the locals to just lay back and rest on top of the walls. Some of which are overrun with plants, but thankfully still well maintained. It seems that the tourism department is determined to make Intramuros an important tourist attraction, but a lot of work still needs to be done.
