The city of Manila is home to one of the largest historical sites in the country – Intramuros or the Walled City. This place was what Manila was during the Spanish times, the entire city was surrounded by walls to protect it from outsiders. Inside all the Spanish elite stay including the rich and religious. It is a city onto itself as it contains several large churches in its area.
The entrance of Intramuros is marked by the a statue of one of the heroes in the days of the Philippine Revolution. In this case, it is dedicated to Juan Luna. Juan Luna is one of the revolutionaries that day, but he is more known for his skill in painting. His painting called the Spoliarium won a gold medal in the Madrid Exposition and was recognized in numerous other exhibitions. He was accused of being part of the revolutionary group and was arrested. Nonetheless he tirelessly worked for the establishment of a Philippine Republic.
