National Museum of the Philippines

The city of Manila has a good number of colonial era buildings most of which still stand and remain in use today. Right beside the Manila City Hall stands the elegant National Museum of the Philippines. The National Museum of the Philippines building is one of the more significant and impressive buildings in the area. This building reminds me of structures that can be found in the United States and Europe. Indeed, the building was built during the American Occupation and has been used for different purposes until its current use as the site of the National Museum.

Just across the National Museum building was a small park, which was unfortunately not very well maintained, kind of surprising since this is just a stone’s throw away from city hall. In fact, there was someone washing their clothes at the fountain at that time. The park has a large statue dedicated to the martyr trio of priests collectively known as GomBurza – Fathers Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora. The trio were executed by the Spanish on charges of participation in a mutiny. The execution of the priest contributed to the snowballing disgust at the Spanish authorities during that time.
