Even further beyond the Hortpark, going through the gates of Hortpark is yet another park. This leg of the Southern Ridges walk is call the Canopy Walk. Just like the Forest Walk, the Canopy Walk is also on top of a hill. There is a mild climb up the hill which brings you through some thick vegetation. I’m happy to see how much they have tried to preserve the forest here.
Following the trail from the Hortpark, you will discover that the Southern Ridges trail goes even further than this place. It seems the number of parks connected is quite large, and this trail and lead to the Science Park and the National University of Singapore. I wasn’t expecting to be walking this far, but maybe sometime I can try to do that walk. The highlight ot the Canopy walk is of course the Canopy Walk. This is basically a wooden walkway built on a ridge on the hill.
This area is known as Pasir Panjang, and the hill, as it goes with most hills in Singapore, formed an integral part of the history of Singapore during the Second World War. Since it has a relatively high elevation, the hill served as an important obvservation post for Singapore and its defense. From the walkway you can see great views of the surrounding area, including the area where I just came from. I didn’t realize that I had already walked so far. And I’m impressed how Singapore managed to stitch up all these parks together. They might not have as extensive park network as a Hong Kong, but they sure are working hard on catching up.
