The Kampong Glam area of Singapore was a surprisingly interesting place, aside from that ho-hum Malay Heritage Center, of course. After passing through a restaurant row, we cross Arab Street into a small artsy lane called Haji Lane. The tiny street is also lined with restaurants mostly the Middle Eastern fare and it is not unusual to see people sitting on the curb having a shisha or hookah. I have been to some of these Middle Eastern restaurants and although they are not five star restaurants, the food is refreshingly different but good. I make it a point to drop by area once in a while.
However, Haji Lane is not just about restaurants, there are a lot of boutiques here which sell primarily womens clothing, which I noticed are quite popular with the ladies. I know a few friends who love to shop for clothes here. Prices here are quite affordable too. The shop houses themselves are also quite interesting, as this would probably be the only place you see public graffiti in Singapore. However, most of these are used as decorations on the shop houses themselves. Some of them have interesting designs too.
