It may not be too obvious to westerner but Singapore has a large Muslim community courtesy of its neighbors Malaysia and indonesia. Even in the 1800s and 1900s Singapore was a center for Islamic trading. With the coming of the British this has been somewhat subdued. However, the British managed to get the cooperation of the local Sultan in exchange for a small fortune. The sultan then built this mosque where it now stands. It has since been rebuilt and expanded several times.
The Masjid Sultan or Sultan Mosque is one of the major landmarks of Singapore. It is located in a place generally known as Arab Street, though Arab Street is really just a street. The mosque is actually on Bussorah Street. Not surprisingly, there are a lot of Islamic establishments in this area like bookstores and restaurants. Bussorah Street is closed to traffic and it actually quite photogenic. Little wonder that visitors make it a point to come here.
