Central can be considered the Central Business District of Hong Kong. In fact, the CBD area just seems to flow from Central the Ardmiralty Area with no distinct boundaries. Being the building lover that I am, one of my greatest pleasures is to just walk around this area admiring the skyscrapers of the CBD. Hong Kong has a lot of old buildings and a lot of new ones.
The old ones are mostly residential buildings already dark a gloomy but still filled with the life of everyday Hong Kong. The new ones are glass covered masterpieces that will stand out in any other city. But this is Hong Kong, an international city and basically every new building here is a work of art. But their is not much room to build buildings here. So they build up. Space is such a premium here, that even the mountainsides have been taken over for development. The Mid-Levels is a prime example of this, a lot of fancy residential towers have been set up here. Along with the bar and restaurants that usually go with it.
To get to the Mid-Levels there is a long series of escalators going up. Actually it depends on the time. In the morning the escalators head down, when everybody needs to go to work. In the evening, it heads up where everyone else lives. It is a wonder to be exploring all of these places and seeing how people would live and enjoy life in such small quarters. But mind you, they may be small but these houses are among the most expensive in Hong Kong.
