Continuing our journey to Hoi An, we were approaching Danang City. However our path was obstructed by mountains. The highway we were traveling on then started to climb up along the mountain. The highway would twist and turn along the mountainside for most of the stretch to Danang City.
At the highest point of the road we reach the place called Hai Van Pass. This is basically a stopover/lookout spot for most travelers. It has a great view of the sea and of Danang City.
It is called Đèo Hải Vân by the Vietnamese. The name means “sea clouds”, and the name is no coincidence. It was pretty cool up here on Hai Van Pass. And it certainly becames misty in certain days. Unfortunately, this was not one of those days.
The stopover area has a some small eateries that will cater to the weary traveler. I don’t think there are places to stay here though. A little walk up a small hill nearby reveals a old Vietnam war era bunker. Little surprise they built one here since it has a commanding view of the surrounding area. I was also a little wary of venturing too far from the main road as there might be unexploded land mines in the area.
The stopover at Hai Van Pass certainly is a refreshing one since I would get time to rest my butt from the constant jarring of the motorcycle. My arms were already changing color from the scorching sun. We took time to have a few refreshments at one of the eateries at Hai Van Pass before we again set out for Hoi An.
