A trip to Serangoon Road is truly one of the more unique experiences in Singapore. Serangoon Road is home to Little India in Singapore. As one would expect, this is the focal point of the Indian community in Singapore. It is a long stretch of Indian shops ranging from incense, clothes and, of course, Indian food.

Surely the scents alone with be more than enough to let you know that you are truly in Little India. The scents of spices and garlands of jasmine flowers waft through the air. Surprisingly, Indians only came to stay here only in the late 19th century. Considering the proximity of Singapore to India, they seem to be quite late in settling here. Since then, it has grown to be the place for Indians in Singapore, and has also become a tourist attraction in its own right.

On the right of Serangoon Road is an Indian market selling all sorts of stuff, from flowers, trinkets, books and DVDs. It is really fascinating to just wander around from stall to stall looking at what they have. Watch out though, some of the stall owners don’t seem to appreciate taking photos of their merchandise.

Towards the end of Serangoon Road, are a couple of Hindu Temples. They are spectacular with their brightly colored roof studded with carvings of Hindu relgious figures. It is possible for tourists to enter the temple grounds, but note that you’d have to leave your footwear behind.

Little India is easy to get to as it has an MRT station connecting to it.
